Introducing Downtown Sonora

All visitors need to make sure they visit Sonora's Historic Downtown.  Many of the buildings have recently been refurbished and the area is growing with tourism features.  The most prominent feature would be the recently restored Sutton County Courthouse that sits at the top of Main Street.  Around the courthouse you will find some neat circa early 1900's attractions.  On Main Street and Water Avenue, which runs in front of the courthouse you will find new and fun boutiques like The Mercantile Garden Antiques and Uniques, Wild Bill's, and Team Graphics.  There is also an excellent delicatessen called the The Mercantile on Main.

If you need a guide for downtown then visit the Friends of Historic Main Street for downtown tourism information.  It is a great way for visitors to spend and evening or a road break.  Check out these videos of Sonora Tourism Highlights.  The community was also featured in the Best of the Pecos Travel Guide.

The Best Western Sonora Inn is a great place to stay when you visit Sonora's vibrant downtown.  We would encourage all of our guests to pay it a visit before leaving town.

Outlaw Camps Spotted on Eaton Hill

UP ON EATON HILL - A contribution from Delyse Jaeger, Eaton Hill Wildlife Sanctuary

Well, Howdy Pilgrim!

Can you guess the movie that featured the line, “Morons, I’ve got morons on my team.”?  Well, it was the classic western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford.  Their employer had hired the two outlaws to protect the payroll as he brought it from the bank, up the mountain to the mine.  Problem was, Butch and Sundance were spending all their energy looking for robbers on the way DOWN the mountain while the saddlebags were still empty.  What, you may ask, has this to do with Eaton Hill?  Well, as previously mentioned, the Sonora Texas Outlaw Trail has begun to take shape on Eaton Hill. And being that Will Carver, former outlaw and current resident of our local cemetery, is said to have ridden with Butch Cassidy, it was the perfect opportunity to slide in a reference to an all time great line from an all time great film.

The Outlaw Trail on Eaton Hill will give visitors a glimpse of legendary men who operated outside the law and, for the most part, came to violent ends in the streets, barrooms and hillsides of the Wild West.  It’s part of our local history that people from all over the world can relate to, and we can actually give Hollywood genuine credit for that.  Needles…Haystacks…

Please contact the Eaton Hill Wildlife Sanctuary office at (325) 387-2615

Best Western Sonora Inn would like to welcome visitors exploring the Eaton Hill and thank Eaton Hill Wildlife Sanctuary for their great community support.

Introducing Eaton Hill

In Sonora, Texas we have a plethora of natural resources and wildlife and there is no better way to experience nature in our community than the Eaton Hill Wildlife Sanctuary.  Eaton Hill is a great place for nature lovers and I-10 travelers to get out and stretch their legs in a natural setting.  You can easily walk short trails in a matter of minutes or spend all day exploring all of the many  trails, water features, and birding blinds that cover the hill.  Eaton Hill Wildlife Sanctuary is relatively young, but the people of the community are committed to helping the feature mature.  Three different entrances can be found leading up to the hill or you can begin your adventure at the nature center on top of the hill, which is set to open this upcoming week.  The Best Western Sonora Inn would like to congratulate Eaton Hill on reaching this mile stone, and will publish contributions from our friends at Eaton Hill in future installments of our Community and Events blog.
